Research Team

Maritime Simulation Institute's research team has all the required knowledge and skills to set up, conduct, and report on research projects employing real time, human-in-the-loop simulation. The team normally comprises the following persons:

Project Manager

A mariner with extensive simulator experience interfaces with the customer, oversees preparation, conducts the simulation, and collaborates on the final report.

Database Programmer

Prepares the area in which the simulation will take place and is on hand to make modifications as required.

Hydrodynamicist

Builds the simulated ships, models unusual physical phenomena, and is available to modify dynamic models as required.

Simulation engineer

Manages any changes necessary in the simulation hardware or software in order to meet the needs of the particular research.

Software engineer

Has a thorough knowledge of the simulation and is available to make changes in the simulation to model new phenomenon, to create new output, and to build special analysis tools.

Simulator Operator

One or more persons with maritime experience who prepare the simulators, run the experiments, and collect the data.

Simulator Technician

Assures smooth functioning of the simulators and is on hand to make immediate repairs or changes as required.

This team has the necessary knowledge and skill to examine nearly every aspect of terminal design and operation including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Channel dimensions
  • Mooring line loading
  • Turning basin dimensions
  • Load forces on piers
  • Navigation aid location
  • Load forces on mooring dolphins
  • Slip orientation
  • Pier design evaluation
  • Tug type selection
  • Safety margins
  • Tug placement and use
  • Environmental conditions limiting operation
  • Mooring procedures

In addition, after the terminal design and mooring procedures have been established, The Maritime Simulation Institute team can help train the population of ship masters, tug masters, and pilots who will be called upon to maneuver ships in the new environment.
